Consciousness: The Final Frontier

In the human being we see the fullest reflection of consciousness. What does it mean? ‘the fullest reflection of consciousness’ and how is consciousness the final frontier? Consciousness is the fundamental stuff which makes up this physical world and the closer one comes to it, the clearer the reflection. The fundamental stuff is your own inner ‘I’ looking out through your eyes.

Before the Big Bang, consciousness existed in a balanced state, the universe was filled with possibilities.  With the Big Bang, time and space expanded, the universe came into existence.  The five fundamental factors of ether, air, light, liquid and solid were expressed.

All the while consciousness is there, as the medium for this expression, transforming, as a potter shapes his clay.  At the maximum point of solidification one of two things happens, explosion or implosion. Implosion means transformation of inanimate to animate, creation of the single cell, protozoa.

MARCH OF CONSCIOUSNESS

The march of consciousness continues on through stages of complex organisms, plants, animals and finally human being.  Now consciousness has a developed mind and it can sense life in the varied stages of creation.  A human mind has the capacity to think about itself and contemplate its own existence, to wonder where it came from and where it will end up.

Meditation is the practice of mindfully taking yourself from a state of wondering to a state of certainty.  It is an ancient discipline, allowing the mind to look at itself and experience consciousness not only as a personal possession but as a unifying factor.

There is a story about two yogis who went to the Guru to ask how many life times they had left  before the final union.  The first asked and the guru said, “you have two lives left,” the yogi was devastated, “Oh no, I can’t wait,” the second one asked and the guru said,  “you have as many lives as that tree has leaves” (tree is full of leaves), yogi jumps for joy, “how wonderful, that I have so many lives left to enjoy this world,” suddenly all the leaves fell off the tree!

FINAL FRONTIER

We can never know the final state of oneness, because our consciousness, limited as it has become by our thoughts of me and mine, will in the end simply merge with Cosmic Consciousness like the river merges with the ocean.  As one saint put it, “the doll made of salt went to measure the depth of the ocean and never returned.”
